Episode 90: Family First with Natalie Hanson

Natalie Hanson is a mom of five, a blogger, a woman passionate about ensuring all of Tulsa, Oklahoma is fed and taken care of, and a young woman from Georgia who married young...to Taylor Hanson. (Yes, that’s one of THE Hanson brothers). One of Tesi and Leslie’s all-time favorite guests, Julie Lyles Carr, recommended “one of her favorite people in the history of all time” and after listening to the conversation that takes place with Natalie, you’ll be able to see why. Natalie, Tesi, and Leslie dive into marrying and mothering young, involving kids in community service, teaching sons and daughters to “show up,” and taking note of what’s going on in your own backyard. As always, Leslie and Tesi highlight the incredible work their guests are doing and hope listeners take away nuggets of love in action, as all of us journey toward understanding and living our best lives!

Episode 89: Creating Your Family Brand

On Episode 89 of the Mama Bear Dares podcast, Tesi and Leslie get practical. As a family unit in a complex world, they know that listeners are just like them...they’re continually evolving and redefining who they are and where their values lie. How do we identify those values and live them out on the daily? How do we express our values as a family? One way is through the creation of a “family brand.” Tesi and Leslie follow cues from Bruce Feiler’s The Secrets of Happy Families and dive into how to make a family brand. Similar to a mission statement, a family brand is a motivator when obstacles mount and articulates success in times of celebration; can help parents make decisions in moments both big and small; and is easily repeatable and ultimately can unite your household and serve as a reminder of what you hold dear. The Mama Bears love the promise that the new year brings and today’s episode will follow the theme of new beginnings and narrow in on how our intentions of lovingkindness might play out as a family unit. Be sure to listen in as Tesi and Leslie reveal their own family brands and help you create your own!

Steps to Creating Your Family Brand*

  1. Carve Out Time
  2. Center and Discuss
  3. Try it On
  4. Print it Out to Live it Out
  5. Revisit and Reflect

Episode 74: Faith, Love, and Fidelity with Katherine Willis Pershey

On Episode 74 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, Tesi and Leslie talk to Katherine Willis Pershey, a mother, pastor, thinker, and author, about what it's like to feel the temptation of an extra-marital affair and then process that temptation within her relationship to her husband, her children, her church, and the larger world. The three women—each of whom has been married to their respective spouses for approximately 14 years—discuss our culture and how it impacts the way we live out our vows. Tesi and Leslie listen as Katherine opens up about her near-infidelity, about the hard work of marriage and the beauty and challenge of a sacred covenant, and the healing and growing process that resulted in an honest, candid book called Very Married: Field Notes on Love and Fidelity.

Episode 71: Let's Lighten Up

It's been getting a little hot in here. Tesi and Leslie have recorded a string of Mama Bear Minis focusing on the hard work of marriage, on the rampant rape culture prevalent here in the U.S.A., and how racism plays out in our homes and our responsibility as Mama Bears to do our best to squash it. Because of the serious nature of these episodes, the hosts decided they needed a little break from the intensity and talk about lighter fare on Episode 71, specifically, books, television, and food. Listen in as they do their best to embrace a little levity.

Books

Leslie's reading Wonder Women: 25 Innovators, Inventors, and Trailblazers Who Changed History and a magazine called Breathe (and Make Time for Yourself).

Tesi just started The Leftovers, a novel by Tom Perrotta.

Television

Listen in to hear what Leslie and Tesi are watching AND to learn the identity of the one and only celebrity Tesi has ever felt moved to tweet at!

Food

Leslie's been loving sweet potatoes. Here are a few ways to cook and eat them.

Tesi's latest "company" dinner (the meal she serves to guests!). Listen in for details, but start the sauce here: Peanut Butter Tofu Sauce: 1 C brown sugar, 1 C soy sauce, 1 C peanut butter, 2 tsp chili garlic sauce. Combine with tofu and then toss with pasta or long grain rice.

Tesi's favorite TV-watching snack is Smart Pop!

Episode 63: Taking on the Mantle of Motherhood with Julie Lyles Carr

On Episode 63 of the Mama Bear Dares podcast, Leslie and Tesi spend the hour with Julie Lyles Carr, an incredible and inspiring woman who is a writer, photographer, pastor, and the founder/director of a non-profit called Legacy of Hope. Julie drops by the podcast to tell the hosts about her new book, Raising An Original, but the three women end up covering not just the topics inherent to writing and the content of what she's created, but the importance of staying curious, taking care of the Other Self (for Julie, running, reading, bathing, and quiet time does the trick!), and best practices in parenting original kids as the original women and men we were created to be. The conversation stretches in all sorts of ways and Leslie and Tesi spend their time soaking up the wisdom of this delightful woman. Julie is thoughtful and intelligent, loving and charming. If you are for growth, action, and intentional and nuanced parenting, you'll adore today's conversation.

Also discussed on the podcast:

  • The beauty of staying curious
  • Becoming a mouthpiece to solutions in this broken world
  • Honoring your original kid
  • Honoring the original way in which you parent
  • Giving ourselves permission to BE an original so that we can RAISE an original
  • The danger of asking our children to carry our identity
  • Awakening your "noticer" — paying attention to each child's unique personality and human traits, and recognizing this as a process that is forever changing

Episode 62: The Clarity & Freedom of Organizing The F Drawer

It's easy to fall victim to our inability to live an authentic life simply by giving up our agency and forgetting that we're the ones steering the ship. Whether it's because we're trying to please someone, we're trying to protect or bolster our reputation, or we just don't know how to say no, so often we end up going places that we have no desire to be, engaging in battles that ultimately don't matter, and spending precious energy on things that are soul-sucking. Co-hosts Leslie and Tesi tackle these ideas in a segment called We Read, We Loved It, Let's Discuss and then jump into a new segment called We See You, which is a celebration of modern-day motherhood and the ways that so many are wearing it with incredible grace and gusto.

WE READ IT, WE LOVED IT, LET'S DISCUSS

In this portion of the Mama Bear Mini, co-hosts discuss the book The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving an F*ck: How to Stop Spending Time You Don't Have with People You Don't Like Doing Things You Don't Want To Do by Sarah Knight. The women discuss the need to do internal work in order to live the life we want. They envision tidying up their "mental F drawers," as Knight suggests, and prioritizing things, people, and activities in order to steer the ship that is life. Tesi and Leslie discuss their "F drawers" and "F budgets," organizing and prioritizing in hopes for healthier relationships and richer lives.

In an extension of this conversation, Leslie and Tesi discuss the opportunity as Mama Bears to drawhard-lines and organize our collective Mama Bear "F drawers" in hopes of more peace and less judgement between moms. For instance, child birth. It's hard to judge a natural birth vs. an epidural when you don't give an F.

WE SEE YOU

Leslie and Tesi do some reconnaissance on motherhood in the trenches and pull together a list of positive observations. The hosts do this in an act of intentional celebration. Too often women bring what needs to be improved to the forefront and forget about what they slay on the daily. Today, we take the time to lift up big and small victories! Listeners, help us! What have you noticed?

Episode 61: Failure Does Not Define Us with Christina Ceranna

In Episode 61 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, co-hosts Tesi and Leslie talk to Christina Ceranna about womanhood, friendship, and, most prominently, failure. The three women speak openly about times they've failed, about times they've been afraid to fail, about their children seeing them fail, and about the gifts that accompany the journey. The fear of failure so often stops us from pursuing our passions, simply because we are consumed by the idea that if the proejct fails, then it means we are failures. Today's conversation challenges listeners to become bedmates with failure and begin to understand that it is just another thing can happen to us, but does not define us. Throughout the candid conversation, the hosts lean into the unwavering kindness, thoughtfulness, and positivity of Christina and her quest to constantly grow as an individual.

Other themes that weave in and out of the conversation include:

  • Infertility and adoption
  • Divorce
  • Parenting without an agenda

OBSESS SESH:

We loved hearing about Christina's obsessions! She's currently loving asos.com for clothing (both maternity and otherwise), alcohol-free wine (perfect for the preggo mama), spray tans, and fake eyelashes.
